5 Weeks Post-Op

So we made it! Rufio made it through his amputation and first round of chemo like a champ while we were still able to get married and go on our honeymoon! I didn’t think it all could happen so well given the sudden and unexpected diagnosis (and cost!) 3 weeks prior to our wedding. We even brought cutouts of both our poochies to the wedding to honor them (Rufio’s was no where near life size unfortunately).

Everything from our cake topper to our place cards had custom silhouettes of both the dogs – I’m sure people thought we were crazy but I didn’t care it made me so happy to have them all around us in every way!

Rufio is hopping around on his legs pretty well but I am starting to realize I need to probably do so rehab to build his strength and he gets tired real quick. Going up stairs is a breeze for him (except for the one time he was so tired he face planted and I cried…bad mom moment) and going down is a little bit more for him to do but he’s doing it!

This Friday is his 2nd dose of chemo and we’re going in for the big drug doxorubicin. They say this one is a little more rough on the dogs so I’m a little nervous. We’re doing the alternating of doxorubicin and carboplatin – has anyone tried this before? It was highly recommended by our oncologist and I’ve read it’s advantageous but I haven’t heard from anyone’s personal experience.

Overall I’m happy my boy is still with me and wanting to get outside and chase rabbits and squirrels! Here’s hoping he gets more enjoyment out of life for longer 🙂

Congratulations you’re a beautiful couple! So glad for this happy update on your beautiful boy. Yup hopping around is really hard work and rehab helps a lot to build core strength which is so important for a Tripawd. Crossing fingers, toes and paws here the new chemo is tolerated well. Please keep us posted on how Rufio does.

Congratulations, and what a beautiful photo! So happy everything turned out well; I’m sure the stress was out of the stratosphere. One of those events are stressful enought, but to add it all to the mix? I love that you incorporated the pooches in your special day. I think doxy was used 20 years ago with my first dobe’s lymphoma, but this go round it was only carboplatin. I honestly can’t remember the former one much, so I’m not much help. If your vet is recommending it highly, they must feel good about it, and know how to combat any possible negative issues (nauseau). Good luck moving forward!

How wonderful to see both of you so happy and looking gorgeous and with the pups, too at your wedding. Big congrats!

So, so pleased to hear how well Rufio is doing. We are probably going to start rehab again with Pofi, also, as I want to see about improving strength and stamina.

Best thoughts for the round of doxo!

OMD!!! This picture is absolutely beautiful on so many levels!!!! I adore how you included your pooches in every aspect of your wedding! So sweet!

You are a lovely bride and your dress is exquisite in a refreshing understated way. And hubby is a very handsome fella’! The smiles you two have infuses happiness in all of us! 🙂

Suggestion as far as alternating Carboplatin and Doxorubican. Make a thread over in the forums and ask for feedback in anyone who has gone this route. I know some have. For my Happy Hannah’s osteosarcoma, it was four straight rounds of Carboplatin and she tolerated that very well.

I’ve forgotten where you live, but the summer heat tires our tripawds out very quickly. And chemo can make some dogs a bit more lethargic for a few days.

It sounds like Rufio is thoroughly enjoying life and loving all the spoiling…And being Rufio!! Run squirrels, Run!

Lots of love Mr. And Mrs…..

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!
